What would you say are some popluar video game titles? Madden? Call of Duty? GTA? Skyrim? Mass Effect Series? Or how about the Pokemon Series? Movies? Video Games? Card Games? Television series (Season 14!?!). Some of the games I can name at the top of my head at that moment. Would you say...the Sims series? Most likely not. How do we know if a game series is popular or not? Why wouldn't you say that the sims series isn't a “game.” Define game. A game with goals? Not all games need goals. But what makes this game so popular?
Let's start with square 1: Maxis.
Maxis was founded by Will Wright in 1987. It was originally founded to help publish the successful Sim City game on computers. On July 28th, 1997 Electronic Arts had obtained Maxis and made it apart of their company. And also had taken over the Sims series.
Sims City:
Sim City is a open-ended game where you build and run your own city. Four years after initial development,SimCity was released for the Macintosh platform followed by the IBM PC and Commodore 64 later in 1989.
The objective of SimCity, as the name of the game suggests, is to build and design a city, without specific goals to achieve. The player can mark land as being zoned as commercial, industrial, or residential, add buildings, change the tax rate, build a power grid, build transportation systems and take many other actions, in order to enhance the city. Once able to construct buildings in a particular area, the too-small-to-see residents, known as Sims, may choose to construct and upgrade houses, apartment blocks, light or heavy industrial buildings, commercial buildings, hospitals, churches, and other structures. The Sims make these choices based on such factors as traffic levels, electrical power, crime levels, and proximity to other types of buildings.
Other Sim City Games include: Sim City 2000, Sim City 3000, Streets of Sim City, Sim City 4, and Sim City 5.
After the success of Sim City the Sim francised opened up it's doors to 22 games: Sim Earth: The Living Planet, Sim Ant: The Electronic Ant Colony Sim Life, Sim Farm, , Sim Town, SimGolf, SimPark, SimTunes, SimCopter, Streets of SimCity, Sim Safari, The Sims, The Sims Online, The Sims 2, SimCity, SimTower, SimHealth, SimIsle, and the most selling game in the Sim series The Sims.
In 1991 Maxis releases Sim Ant: The Virtual Ant Colony. The game is essentially a virtual ant colony. The game consists of three modes: a Quick Game, a Full Game, and an Experimental Game. It was released for the IBM PC, Apple Macintosh and Super Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The Nintendo version also added eight scenarios, where the goal in each is to eliminate the enemy red ants in various places each with their own hazards.
The next year (1992) Sim Life is released making it the 4th game by Maxis under the Sim title. The concept of the game is to simulate an ecosystem players may modify the gentics of the plants and animals that inhabit the virtual world. The point of this game is to experiment and create a self sustaining ecosystem.
Sim Golf was released in 1996 following it's procedor Sim Town. The game allows players to design their own golf-courses and play them. Also in 1996 Sim Park was released the object of the game is to cultivate and manage a successful park much like Sim Town released a year before. SimTunes was also released in the same year. SimTunes is a children's software toy designed and released by Maxis in 1996. It involves painting a picture with dots (large pixels), where each colors represents a musical note. The last game released in 1996 was SimCopter. As the name suggests, SimCopter puts the player in the role of a helicopter pilotThere are two modes of play: free mode and career mode. The free mode lets the player import and fly through cities of their own or any of the 30 cities supplied with the game.
In 1998 SimSafari is the 13th game released by Maxis. Unlike SimPark, the game is divided into three different zones, the nature park, the tourist grounds and the African village. The ultimate aim is for the players' park to reach five stars, although like most Sims games the player can continue playing indefinitely. To gain five stars, the player needs to make sure each zone is being run properly. The player can control tourism and staff.
Now that we know about the back bone to The Sims why not talk about it? The Sims was released in 2000 and had two other successors. The Sims 2 and The Sims 3. But what was the Sims? There are 3 modes to the Sims:
Live mode: Where the gameplay actually happens.
Build Mode: You can build a house with things like roofs, doors, and windows.
Buy Mode: Things you can furnish your home with.
When the game begins, each family will start off with §20,000 Simoleons. These funds can be used to purchase a small house or vacant lot on the Neighborhood screen. Once a lot is purchased, a house can be built or remodeled in Build mode, and/or purchase or move furniture in the Buy mode. All architectural features and furnishings customizable in the Build and Buy modes follow a square tile system in which items must be placed on a tile. There are different three life stages in The Sims: infant, child and adult. While babies spawn into children, children and adults never age. All Sims, however, can die from various causes.
There are 7 different expansion packs for The Sims: Livin Large, House Party, Hot Date, Vacation, Unleashed, Superstar, and Makin Magic.
The Sims Livin Large was the first expansion pack released on August 1st, 2000. This expansion pack focuses on adding new characters, careers, items, and features that allow for more obscure and extreme gameplay. Many of the games new additions may seem a bit out of place. For example, Sims can transform into Frankenstein-esque monsters by ingesting certain potions made from the chemistry set.
The next expansion pack was The Sims House Party released on April 2nd, 2001. House Party gives players the ability and facilities to hold big parties and gatherings in their Sims' homes. Sims can purchase dance floors, costume trunks, and buffet tables complete with hired caterers.
The fourth expansion pack released by Maxis is The Sims Vacation released on March 28th, 2000. The Sims:Vacation introduces a new destination called "Vacation Island" where Sims can take vacations with family members or with other Sims. This marks the first time Sims can stay on lots away from home. In other words, the game can be saved while a Sim is on Vacation Island. Vacation Island is split into three distinct environments: beach, forest, and snow-capped mountain. Sims can stay in a hotel/igloo while their on Vacation island. They can also purchase or find souvenirs.
The sixith expansion pack released on May 13th, 2003 is The Sims Superstar. This expansion allows the player's Sims to become entertainment figures and includes representations of several famous personalities. A number of celebrities make cameo appearances but cannot be controlled by the player, and include Marilyn Monroe, Christina Aguilera, Sarah McLachlan, and Avril Lavigne. Superstar includes a new destination called "Studio Town" in which celebrity Sims can utilize work items to generate simoleans and fame.
The final expansion pack released by Maxis is Makin Magic released on October 29th, 2003. It introduces magic to the game and allows Sims to cast spells, forge charms, and buy ingredients for spells. Dragons are also made available as pets to hatch from eggs, and can destroy a Sim's home and garden as well as provide spell ingredients. Makin' Magic introduces the Magic Town lots, which house vendors of magical ingredients and items and a number of magic-related mini-games. Sims with enough MagiCoins can buy lots to build houses in Magic Town, which provide special magical benefits and abilities.
The successor of The Sims is The Sims 2 not released by Maxis by Electronic Arts. The Sims 2 was released in September 2004 a year after the original Sims. The Sims 2 characters pass through six life stages - babies, toddlers, children, teenagers, young adults, adults, and elders - with eventual death of old age, while babies in The Sims only become children before ceasing to continue aging. The aspiration system is also new to The Sims 2. Sims can have children of their own and pass down their genetics. Genetics play a major role in the game, and as such, dominant and recessive genes play a larger role than they did in the original game. The Sims 2 also introduces Stuff Packs. The Sims 2 has 8 expansion packs: University, Nightlife, Open for business, Pets, Seasons, Bon Voyage, Free Time, and Apartment Life.
The first expansion pack is University released on March 1st, 2005. University adds the Young Adult life stage between Teen and Adult. Only Sims at college become Young Adults, and any Sims who do not attend college make the transition directly to adults. The new college towns are linked to a specific neighborhood and preserve the same separation home neighborhoods do. University comes with three college towns:Sim State University, La Fiesta Tech, and Académie Le Tour. In the towns are three further types of residential lots: dorms, private housing, and Greek Houses, although there are no Greek Houses in Académie Le Tour. In communal dorms, NPC Sims fill in the house vacancies. Custom dorms cannot be built without the use of cheat codes. A Sim with enough scholarship money may start out in a private house. The premade neighborhoods generally include recreation centers, libraries, and other student centers.
The third expansion pack released is The Sims 2 Open For Business on September 4th, 2006. The concept of running a business is the game's main new feature. This is a new direction for The Sims 2, as it now includes elements of a business simulation game. The game allows the player to control various aspects of running a business including picking which products to sell, hiring and firing employees, crafting goods, and restocking shelves. The game also rewards the player for meeting several predetermined goals; also, a mystery shopper may visit the business and critique it.
The fifth expansion pack released is The Sims 2 Seasons on March 2nd, 2007. The Sims 2 Seasons expansion pack introduces two new game play concepts to The Sims 2 series: weather and seasons. Each season lasts for approximately five Sim days and players have the option to alter their order of progression.
Sims are able to build snowmen during the Winter, rake fallen leaves in Fall jump in puddles during Spring, occasionally experience heatstroke inSummer and so on.
The sixth expansion pack released on September 4th, 2007 is the Sims 2 Bon Voyage. There are three vacation destinations in Bon Voyage: Three Lakes (the mountain woodland), Takemizu Village (the Far East) and Twikkii Island (the beach). The player can choose to take a single Sim, or a group on a vacation to one of these areas. While on vacation, Sims do not have to work or go to school.
Each destination has its own secret lot which can be found by getting a secret map. One of the ways a player can get a map is by digging on terrain. Players can also create custom destinations or buy vacation homes. There are many new NPCs including ninjas, pirates, fire dancers, local chefs, various hotel staff, etc. Sims can learn different things such as dances, massage and gestures from the locals at vacation destinations.
The seventh EP released on February 26th, 2008 is the Sims 2 Freetime. The ten hobbies included in the expansion pack are fitness, cooking, music/dance, sports, nature, science,films/literature, gaming, tinkering, and arts/crafts. Every Sim is created with a predetermined "preferred" hobby which cannot be modified by the player. While the bar is filled, the Sim is "in the zone", shown graphically as a white glow around the Sim; causing their needs to decay more slowly than usual, as to allow extra time on that hobby.
The eigth and last EP is the Sims 2 Apartment Life on August 27th, 2008. This expansion pack includes features like Sims' relationships with neighbors inhabiting the same apartment building, interacting with an NPC landlord, a new reputation system, and new activities for publicly accessible lots.
The Sims Series has evolved from one little game to a big franchise. Do you ever think about the games you play or their origins? Or just play them? You'll learn a lot.
